How to Organize a Tiny Kitchen
A step-by-step approach that works whether you rent, own, or share.

A tiny kitchen can absolutely be a good kitchen. It just has no tolerance for clutter. This is a practical order for tackling it.
Step 1: Take everything out of one zone
Not the whole kitchen , one zone. The cabinet by the stove, or the drawer under the counter. Doing it in pieces means you actually finish.
Step 2: Sort into three piles
- Daily , stays within arm's reach.
- Weekly , goes in a cabinet or drawer nearby.
- Rarely , high shelf, top of the fridge, or another room.
Anything you haven't used in a year goes in a box. If you don't open the box in three months, donate it.
Step 3: Put things where you use them
Pots near the stove. Mugs above the kettle. Knives and boards near the biggest stretch of counter. This alone makes a kitchen feel twice as easy to use.
Step 4: Go up the walls
Rails with hooks for utensils, a magnetic strip for knives, a narrow shelf for spices. Walls are the space a tiny kitchen has most of.
Step 5: Fix the drawers
Dividers stop the everyday drawer from turning into a jumble. Match the divider height to the drawer.
Step 6: Clear the counter
Leave one appliance out. Move the rest into cabinets. Add a roll-up dish rack if the sink area is tight.
Step 7: Buy last
Only now, after you've lived with the new layout for a week, buy the one or two things that would fix a remaining problem.
Practical tip: A tiny kitchen doesn't need to hold everything. It needs to hold what you cook with.
