10 Kitchen Products That Save Counter Space

Simple ways to get your counters back without renovating anything.

Counter space is the thing small kitchens run out of first. The good news is that most of what sits on a counter can move to a wall, a door, or the inside of a cabinet.

Start by clearing, not buying

Before you buy anything, take everything off the counter and put back only what you use daily. For most people that's the kettle or coffee maker and possibly a knife block. Everything else is a candidate for moving.

1. Roll-up over-the-sink dish rack

The sink becomes your drying space. When you're finished, the rack rolls up and slides beside the fridge.

2. Magnetic knife strip

Replaces the knife block, which is one of the biggest counter hogs.

3. Wall-mounted paper towel holder

Paper towels take up more counter than you'd think. Mount them under a cabinet.

4. Under-cabinet spice rack

Spices belong near the stove but not on the counter next to it.

5. Stovetop cover or board

A board that sits over the burners gives you a whole extra work surface when you're not cooking.

6. Cabinet shelf risers

More room inside cabinets means fewer things spill onto the counter.

7. Wall hooks for utensils

A short rail with S-hooks holds spatulas, tongs, and a ladle.

8. Slim rolling cart

If you have a 6-inch gap next to the fridge, a rolling cart can hold oils, spices, and bottles.

9. Fold-down wall shelf

A small fold-down shelf gives you a landing spot for hot pans that disappears when you don't need it.

10. Appliance garage or cabinet spot

Pick one small appliance (toaster, blender) to store in a cabinet and take out when needed. It sounds inconvenient; it rarely is.

Practical tip: Aim for one clear stretch of counter at least two feet wide. That's enough to actually cook.
