Small-Space Storage Ideas That Don't Look Like Storage

Organization for apartments that keeps things useful and still looks like a home.

In a small home, storage that looks like storage makes the place feel like a stockroom. These ideas are designed to blend in rather than make a small home feel like a stockroom.

Furniture that opens

A bench at the end of the bed, an ottoman with a lid, a coffee table with drawers. Choose one piece per room that hides things.

Baskets under everything

Under the console table, under the bed, under the bench. Matching baskets look intentional and hold a lot.

Hooks by the door

A row of hooks replaces a coat rack and a pile of bags. Add a small shelf above for keys and mail.

Use the back of doors

Closet doors, bathroom doors, pantry doors. Slim organizers hold shoes, cleaning supplies, or scarves without taking any floor space.

Go higher than feels natural

A shelf above a doorway or near the ceiling holds things you use rarely: luggage, seasonal items, extra bedding in a bag.

Trays and turntables on flat surfaces

A tray on the dresser or a turntable in the bathroom cabinet keeps small things grouped. Grouped things look tidy even when there are lots of them.

One in, one out

The only rule that keeps a small home from filling up. New sweater in, old one out.

Practical tip: Walk around your home and count the flat surfaces with piles on them. Each pile is asking for a basket, a tray, or a hook.
