Best Kitchen Organization Ideas for Small Cabinets

Get more out of shallow, awkward, and just-too-small cabinets.

Small cabinets aren't the problem. Unused air inside them is. Most cabinets have a foot of empty space above the plates and a dark back corner where things go missing. Here's how to use both.

Use the height

A shelf riser adds a second level in seconds. Put plates underneath and bowls or mugs on top. For tall cabinets, stack two.

Use the back corner

A turntable means the back of the cabinet is as reachable as the front. One can organize oils and vinegars near the stove, while another can keep sauces reachable in the fridge.

Use the doors

The inside of a cabinet door can hold measuring spoons, a small spice rack, pot lids, or a cutting board. Adhesive hooks are enough for light items.

Zone by task, not by type

Put everything for making coffee in one cabinet. Everything for baking in another. It's faster than "all the bowls here, all the cups there."

Decant only what you use often

Decanting looks nice but takes time. Only decant staples you reach for daily , rice, oats, flour , and leave the rest in their packaging.

Store lids vertically

A simple wire rack or a tension rod turns a pile of lids into a row you can flip through.

Keep one cabinet slightly empty

Sounds wasteful, but a little slack makes every other cabinet easier to use. Full cabinets get messy the fastest.

Practical tip: Empty one cabinet completely, wipe it, and put back only what belongs there. Doing one cabinet a week is far more realistic than a whole-kitchen weekend.
